HABITAT COMMITTEES

BUILDING/CONSTRUCTION
. Plan and implement the plan for the construction of each new house or restoration of a house.
. Enlist an experienced residential builder to provide leadership and credibility to the construction process
. Work closely with the Volunteer Committee to enlist volunteers needed as the construction begins and continues to completion
. Solicit building materials from local businesses, and be aware of availability of materials from other sources (such as the Twin Cities Habitat warehouse)

CHURCH RELATIONS
. Enlist support from churches in the area (Prayer, volunteer, and financial support)
. Work to enter covenant relationship with every church
. Encourage each church to appoint a contact person for relaying information to the church
. Keep churches informed of needs, progress of work
. Inform churches each year of Day of Prayer for Habitat (3rd Sunday in Sept.) and furnish materials for the day

FAMILY SELECTION
. Draft selection criteria and application forms and procedures
. Screen applications
. Interview prospective families
. Recommend families to the board for approval for home ownership

FAMILY NURTURE (SUPPORT)
. Welcome new families into the Habitat family
. Provide new families with a mutual support system, educational opportunities, and a forum for discussions pertaining to Habitat home ownership
. Act as primary liaison between the affiliate and the homeowner families
. Work with the family in legal and financial matters involved in the purchase of a house
. Appoint a family sponsor to work with the homeowner family from the time they are selected through the time they move in and for six months or more after they are settled
. Plan and arrange for ground-breaking and house dedication services

FUND RAISING
. Develop and implement creative fund-raising ideas
. Work with Public Relations Committee to get word out about fund-raising events . Research donor sources
. Personally contact potential donors
. Write grant proposals to corporations and foundations

PUBLIC RELATIONS
. Be well informed about the history and vision of Habitat and of this affiliate
. Be able to state the purpose of the affiliate
. Assemble information about the progress of the affiliate and specific ways people can get involved (Times and locations of meetings, volunteer opportunities, etc)
. Keep news media informed of important coming events (Annual meeting, family selection, building plans, building progress, house dedication, etc.) . Plan, prepare, and publish a periodic news letter . Form a speakers bureau

SITE SELECTION
. Search for property in the affiliate's area that is readily available at a reasonable cost
. Identify and recommend property for acquisition to the board
. Keep in mind that the affiliate will also restore older houses if they are available for such work

VOLUNTEER
. Develop and implement a plan for recruiting volunteers for committees and for construction and other types of work to be done in the affiliate (office, mailing, helping in fund-raising events, working at the habitat booth at fairs, etc.)
. Keep a current list of volunteers with their names, phone numbers, and skills
. Consult with construction supervisor as to needs from day to day in actual building tasks
. Arrange for a committee member to be present at the work site each workday to handle insurance waiver forms and to keep a record of volunteer hours
. Plan and provide a volunteer appreciation event each year for all volunteers who have done any kind of work with the affiliate
